Liverpool has officially announced the appointment of Feyenoord manager Arne Slot as their new head coach, succeeding Jurgen Klopp
The 45-year-old will commence his role at Anfield on June 1, pending a work permit, after Liverpool reached an agreement with Feyenoord regarding compensation.
While the length of Slot’s contract remains undisclosed by Liverpool, reports suggest he has signed a three-year deal until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Slot arrives at Anfield following a successful three-year tenure at Feyenoord, guiding them to Eredivisie triumph in the 2022-23 season, a year after they narrowly missed out on the Europa Conference League title to Roma.
Despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Slot extended his stay with Feyenoord after their league success, also securing the KNVB Beker in the 2023-24 season.
Liverpool’s pursuit of a new coach began two months before Klopp’s departure announcement, with the Reds considering various candidates. Initially eyeing Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, they later shifted focus to Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon, but negotiations fell through.
Eventually, Liverpool agreed to terms with Slot, reportedly paying Feyenoord £7.7 million initially, potentially rising to £9.4 million with performance-related bonuses.
Slot’s impending arrival at Liverpool coincides with contract concerns for key players like Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk, all nearing the end of their deals. The new coach may also look to bolster the squad, particularly in light of departures like Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara.
Speculation suggests Slot might bring some familiar faces from Feyenoord, such as David Hancko or Mats Wieffer, to Anfield. However, his primary focus appears to be revitalizing forward Darwin Nunez, aiming to replicate his success with Santiago Gimenez at Feyenoord.
