Chelsea See £21m Bid Rejected as Xabi Alonso Targets Real Madrid Defender
Chelsea have reportedly suffered an early setback in their search for a new left-back after Real Madrid rejected a £21 million offer for Alvaro Carreras.
The Blues are eager to strengthen the position following Marc Cucurella’s departure to the Spanish giants earlier this summer. With a replacement high on the club’s transfer agenda, Chelsea identified Carreras as one of their leading targets.
The 23-year-old defender only joined Real Madrid last year after impressing during his time at Benfica. A former Manchester United academy player, Carreras left Old Trafford without making a senior appearance but has since developed into one of Spain’s most promising full-backs.
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso is understood to be a strong admirer of the defender after working with him during his spell at Real Madrid. Reports suggest Alonso has personally requested the signing, believing Carreras possesses the technical quality, athleticism and tactical intelligence required to fit seamlessly into his system at Stamford Bridge.
However, Real Madrid have made their position clear by rejecting Chelsea’s opening proposal. The Spanish club are reluctant to lose the defender and are expected to demand a significantly higher fee before considering any negotiations.
Chelsea remain determined to recruit another specialist left-back before the transfer window closes and could return with an improved offer if they decide Carreras remains their preferred option.
The Blues are expected to continue exploring alternative targets while assessing whether a breakthrough with Real Madrid is achievable, as Alonso looks to complete another important addition to his squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
