Chelsea Close In on Surprise Signing as Xabi Alonso Targets Defensive Reinforcements
Chelsea are closing in on the surprise signing of Rayo Vallecano left wing-back Pep Chavarría, with respected transfer insiders Fabrizio Romano and Ben Jacobs both reporting that negotiations are progressing positively.
The Blues have moved quickly to strengthen their left-back options following Marc Cucurella’s recent transfer to Real Madrid, a departure that left new head coach Xabi Alonso searching for immediate reinforcements. While Chelsea remain confident in the development of highly-rated Dutch defender Jorrel Hato, the club is determined to add further depth and experience in the position.
Chelsea have already agreed a deal to sign Argentine international Valentín Barco from sister club Strasbourg, but Alonso is keen to bring in another specialist on the left flank. Chavarría has now emerged as a serious target, with talks between Chelsea and Rayo Vallecano already underway.
The 28-year-old Spaniard represents a notable shift from BlueCo’s usual recruitment strategy, which has focused heavily on younger players with long-term potential. However, Alonso is believed to be a strong admirer of Chavarría’s qualities, valuing his experience, defensive discipline and attacking threat from wing-back.
According to reports from Spain, Chelsea’s opening offer of €9 million (£7.7 million) was rejected by Rayo Vallecano. Despite that setback, discussions have continued, with both clubs understood to be working towards an agreement.
The player is also said to be eager to complete the move to Stamford Bridge, giving Chelsea additional confidence that a deal can be finalised. If completed, Chavarría would become another important addition as Alonso continues reshaping Chelsea’s defence ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
