Manchester United Make Contact for Premier League Striker as Gyökeres Alternative

Manchester United have reportedly made contact over a potential move for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, as they step up efforts to strengthen their attack ahead of the new season.

According to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, Watkins has been shortlisted as a serious target by manager Ruben Amorim and the club’s recruitment team.

United are actively searching for a more clinical forward to lead the line, following an underwhelming campaign from Rasmus Højlund. While the Danish striker showed promise in his debut season, he struggled to maintain form during the 2024–25 campaign, scoring just 10 goals in all competitions—only four of which came in the Premier League.

Amorim is eager to bring in a striker capable of delivering consistent goals at the top level and has tasked sporting directors Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell with securing a suitable replacement. The Red Devils had pursued Liam Delap, but the young striker chose Chelsea, largely due to the appeal of Champions League football.

United remain interested in Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyökeres, but with Arsenal also firmly in the race, alternative options are being explored. Watkins, who enjoyed an impressive season at Villa Park, is viewed as a strong candidate.

Although no fee has been agreed, early suggestions indicate Watkins could command a significant transfer fee. Talks are expected to continue as United assess whether the 28-year-old fits both their tactical and financial plans for the 2025/26 campaign.
