Chelsea Warned Against Signing Lyon Talent as Rivals Circle for Transfer
Chelsea have been advised to reconsider their interest in Lyon winger Malick Fofana, amid growing competition from Manchester United and Liverpool.
The 19-year-old has emerged as one of Ligue 1’s most exciting young talents, drawing significant attention following a standout 2024/25 season with the French side.
Fofana joined Lyon from Gent in January 2024 for £17 million and has since seen his value more than double. With Rayan Cherki already departing the club for Manchester City this summer, Lyon are reportedly prepared to entertain offers in the region of £43 million for Fofana.
Despite his potential, former Chelsea and France defender William Gallas has urged the club to focus their recruitment efforts elsewhere. Speaking to Prime Casino, Gallas said: “Malick Fofana is a talented young player, but he’s still developing. I don’t think it’s the right move for Chelsea right now. They already have a lot of attacking options.”
Gallas emphasized that Chelsea should instead prioritize experience and defensive reinforcements: “If I were Chelsea, I’d focus on the defence, especially the right centre-back position. That’s where they’re most vulnerable—not on the wings.”
Chelsea, currently in the United States for the Club World Cup, are expected to be active in the transfer market as Enzo Maresca shapes his squad for the upcoming season. While Fofana’s talent is undeniable, the Blues must weigh whether a move aligns with their current strategic needs.
