Barcelona Considering Surprise Move for Chelsea Midfielder with Limited Appearances

Carney Chukwuemeka has reportedly caught the attention of Barcelona as they weigh the possibility of signing a midfielder in the final weeks of the transfer window, according to sources in Spain.

Chukwuemeka joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in the summer of 2022 for a fee of approximately £20 million.

However, his time at Stamford Bridge has been hampered by injuries, with the 20-year-old making just 27 appearances for the Blues over two seasons.

Barcelona’s Interest in Chukwuemeka

The young midfielder was part of Chelsea’s squad for their pre-season tour of America, starting the first two games against Wrexham and Celtic.

However, he did not feature in the remaining three matches. Earlier in the summer, AC Milan reportedly expressed interest in Chukwuemeka, whose contract includes a £40 million release clause.

Despite his talent, Chukwuemeka’s role under Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca remains uncertain, especially given the competition for midfield spots and the potential for Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku to be used in deeper roles this season.

According to the Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona is intrigued by Chukwuemeka’s “dynamic” and “versatile” profile and has explored the possibility of a deal. However, any move by the Catalan club would depend on whether their coach, Hansi Flick, requests a new midfielder.

While Chelsea has expressed a desire to retain Chukwuemeka, this stance could change if a substantial offer is made.

The player himself might also consider a move if he feels his opportunities for regular playing time at Chelsea are limited, which could hinder his development.
