Chelsea Poised for £119m Windfall from Euro 2024 to Boost New Manager’s Summer Transfer Plans

Chelsea could receive a significant financial boost ahead of new manager Enzo Maresca’s first summer transfer window, thanks to the upcoming 2024 UEFA European Championships in Germany.

The Blues have five players selected for the tournament by their respective national teams. Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher have been included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England squad, Mykhailo Mudryk will represent Ukraine, while Marc Cucurella and goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic have been called up by Spain and Serbia, respectively.

Chelsea will benefit from UEFA’s Club Benefits Programme, which compensates clubs for having their players participate in major tournaments. This scheme has been in place since the 2018 World Cup and will continue for Euro 2024. UEFA has announced that the total amount paid to clubs for the finals will increase from €130m (£110m) to €140m (£119m).

The payment to each club is based on a fixed amount per player per day, starting 10 days before the team’s first match and continuing until the day after their elimination. At Euro 2020, Category 1 clubs like Chelsea received €8,700 (£7,400) per player per day.

With five players in the group stage, Chelsea could receive between £850,000 and £1.5 million, with the potential for more if their players progress further in the tournament. For this to occur, England and Serbia would need to advance to the knockout stages, while Ukraine would have to secure a top-two finish in Group E. Spain, one of the pre-tournament favorites, must also navigate a challenging Group B, which includes Italy, Albania, and Croatia.

Following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Chelsea earned £2.5 million from having 12 players involved, the club is set to receive a smaller sum this time due to fewer players participating. Nonetheless, any additional funds will assist the 44-year-old Maresca in planning a busy transfer period at Stamford Bridge.
