EFL: Tuchel relieved as Chelsea defeat Southamapton
Chelsea on Tuesday night played against Southampton in the EFL cup tournament.
The game was so intense that it ended in a 1-1 draw and later led to the penalty shootout.
Chelsea, however, went on to win the match in a 4-3 scoreline.
Following their recent victory, manager Thomas Tuchel expressed that he was relieved his side won the match.
This is because Chelsea were without some of their key players like Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, yet they were still able to progress into the last eight.
While the EFL Cup tournament remains at the bottom of Chelsea’s list of priorities, the Blues manager was relieved to earn a place in the quarter-finals.
BBC Sport quoted Tuchel as saying: ” It was an intense match of football. It was an open fight, an intense match. We did a good shootout, a lot of quality. Kepa [Arrizabalaga] saved one, it was a miss too.
“We are happy that we made it because it was a completely new team. There were a lot of changes.”
Chelsea will now focus on their next match in the Premier League this weekend, where they will be facing Newcastle Utd.
