Kovacic wins Chelsea goal of the season
Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic’s goal against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge has been selected as the club’s goal of the season.
The Blues fans voted in a series of polls, as the eight shortlisted goals went head-to-head in a series of knock-out rounds, to determine which player receives the award.
The final vote saw fans selecting between Kovacic’s strike against Liverpool and Harvey Vale’s effort for the Blues Under-18s in an FA Youth Cup tie with Blackpool, resulting in an overwhelming victory for the Croatian, who received 88 per cent of the votes.
He had previously beaten competition from Hakim Ziyech and Antonio Rudiger in the first two rounds of polls.
‘That goal was very nice and of course one of the most beautiful goals in my career. I have to say there was a little bit of luck involved because it went in off the post, but I was happy to score,’ Kovacic had said after the match.
Kovacic is now the 11th player to win the Chelsea Goal of the Season award since it began in 2007 and the second to receive it for a strike against Liverpool in the last four years, as former star Eden Hazard had won it in 2019.
