Former Chelsea boss quits role on UEFA board, gives reason

Former Chelsea and now AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho has quit his role on the football body UEFA board.

Mourinho took this decision barely a few days after he was handed a four-match ban by the football governing body, for verbally abusing referee Anthony Taylor following last month’s Europa League final.

Recall that Sevilla won the Europa League title via penalty shootout against Roma after the game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Mourinho, who was dissatisfied with the match in footage that emerged showed him approaching Taylor and yelling expletives in his direction outside the stadium.

The Portuguese has now decided to step away from his role with UEFA.

In his letter, he wrote: “In thanking you for the invitation you extended to me to be a member of the UEFA football board, I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I will be renouncing my participation in this group.

“The conditions which I so strongly believed in when I joined are no longer standing and I felt the obligation to take this decision.

“I kindly ask that you also communicate my decision to the President, Mr. Aleksander Ceferin.”
