UEL: Former Arsenal coach threatens to win second-leg at Emirate

Villarreal coach, Unai Emery, who happens to be a former Arsenal coach has criticised the penalty handed to the Gunners during their faceoff on Thursday in the Uefa Europa League.

According to Emery, he stressed that the penalty shouldn’t have been handed to Arsenal with the game ending in a 2-1 win for Villarreal.

The Spanish side had the early lead in the first leg with two goals thanks to efforts from Manu Trigueros and Raul Albiol.

However, Nicolas Pepe converted a second-half penalty with just over a quarter-hour left on the clock, after Buyako Saka was deemed to have been fouled by Trigueros inside the penalty area.

This further slimmed their chances of moving to the next stage in the UEL as it means they are leading with just a scoreline of 1-0 and it means Arsenal still have a good chance of winning the second leg.

“The penalty is not a penalty. We deserved this victory,” Emery told BT Sport.

He added that the call was a “very important refereeing error and also, with VAR, you can see it.”
