Former England star, Rob Green in a statement said he was surprised by Gareth Southgate’s decision not to bring in Chelsea’s Mason Mount during their goalless draw against the US in the World Cup on Friday.

Rob Green believe the midfielder should have been replaced with the likes of Phil Foden who sat on the bench throughout the game.

Mount was one of the England stars who did not make an impact against the USA but remain on the pitch while the likes of Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling were replaced.

“When England was making the first substitutions I had Mason Mount down to come off. It just didn’t come off for him tonight,” former England goalkeeper Green told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“That doesn’t make him a bad player, it happens. It was baffling that he stayed on for the 90 minutes. It was strange.”

England’s goalless draw against the US comes after their 6-2 win against Iran in their first game. They will now have to defeat Wales to progress to the round of sixteen.
