Premier League disqualifies Abramovich as director
The English Premier League has disqualified Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich as director of Chelsea.
This comes after the Russian billionaire was sanctioned by the UK government, which has also affected Chelsea, who have seen their bank account frozen.
The Blues also currently operate on a special licence.
According to the statement by the Premier League on Saturday, the Blues will still be allowed to play their fixtures despite the announcement.
“Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League Board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a Director of Chelsea Football Club.
“The Board’s decision does not impact on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures, as set out under the terms of a licence issued by the Government which expires on 31 May 2022,” a statement read.
This statement comes ahead of Chelsea’s next game, which holds on Sunday at Stamford Bridge when they host Newcastle United.
The Blues will head to the game after defeating Norwich City in a 3-1 scoreline.
