Euro 2024 Star and Chelsea Target Chooses Barcelona as His Next Club
Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams is reportedly eager to secure a move to Barcelona during this summer’s transfer window, despite strong interest from Premier League clubs, including Chelsea.
The 21-year-old showcased impressive form in the 2023-24 season, scoring eight goals and providing 19 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.
Currently representing Spain at Euro 2024, Williams has started in both matches against Croatia and Italy, contributing to La Roja’s victories of 3-0 and 1-0, respectively.
Williams signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao last December, which includes a release clause of approximately €55 million (£47 million).
His standout performances, particularly his man-of-the-match display against Italy, have made him one of the most notable players at the tournament.
Williams’ Preference for Barcelona
Before Euro 2024, Williams expressed his loyalty to Athletic Bilbao, stating, “I am very happy. It is the club that has given me everything, the one that has bet on me 100%. Athletic is my home.” However, despite this sentiment and reassurances from Athletic president Jon Uriarte about Williams’ contentment in Bilbao, the release clause in his contract suggests a potential move is on the horizon.
According to HITC, despite interest from Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and Chelsea, Williams is prioritizing a transfer to Barcelona.
The player’s representatives have made it clear that Barcelona is his preferred destination.
Financial Considerations and Squad Adjustments
Barcelona’s financial constraints are well-documented, but potential departures of players like Ferran Torres and Raphinha could create the necessary budget space for Williams.
The prospect of a front three featuring Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, and Nico Williams is tantalizing for the Catalan club.
Williams has been a pivotal figure for Athletic Bilbao, amassing 20 goals and 26 assists in 122 appearances, with 11 goals and 19 assists in 103 La Liga matches.
His potential move to Barcelona would align him with young talents like Yamal, who is currently his teammate in the Spain squad.
Future Prospects
A final decision on Williams’ future is not expected until after Euro 2024. Spain is set to conclude their Group B campaign against Albania, having already secured their spot in the round of 16.
Chelsea’s interest in Williams highlights the club’s ambition to bolster their attacking options, but it seems Barcelona remains his preferred destination.
His move to Barcelona could significantly enhance the club’s forward line, promising an exciting future for both the player and the team.
