Chelsea manager defends Fernandez

Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca, has thrown his weight behind Enzo Fernandez over his viral display with his Argentine teammates during the Copa America.

According to Maresca, Fernandez had “no bad intentions” with his offensive chants about French players.

Recall that the Argentine midfielder while celebrating his country’s Copa América win shared a clip of his team-mates singing a racist and homophobic song about some French players’ heritage.

Fernandez, who is on holiday and yet to resume for the pre-season training with the Blues has since tendered apology for the incident.

Amid the criticisms that trailed the video, Chelsea had initiated an internal disciplinary procedure and stated that they “acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate.”

Maresca in a recent statement via ESPN during the Blues tour of the US claimed team spirit has not been damaged at Chelsea.

He added that he doesn’t think there were any bad intentions behind the video.

Maresca stressed that the player involved has already made a statement apologising.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will be playing against Wrexham on Thursday in their first pre-season game under Maresca as their new manager.

Hopefully Chelsea will start Maresca’s reign with a first win.
