Chelsea Eyeing Villarreal Goalkeeper Amid Premier League Interest
Chelsea is reportedly one of several Premier League clubs interested in Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
Chelsea’s Coaching Transition and Transfer Plans
Chelsea are close to appointing Enzo Maresca as their new head coach on a long-term contract. Despite this pending appointment, the club’s recruitment team will manage the summer transfer window, aiming to sign players who fit Maresca’s preferred style of play.
Maresca is said to prioritize a goalkeeper who is adept with their feet to initiate attacks from the back. Currently, Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez are Chelsea’s primary goalkeeping options for the upcoming season, unless new signings are made.
Interest in Filip Jorgensen
According to Relevo, Chelsea is considering reaching out to Villarreal about acquiring Jorgensen. Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also reportedly interested in the 22-year-old Danish Under-21 international, who was born in Sweden.
Jorgensen is under contract with Villarreal until the end of the 2026-27 season, which could complicate negotiations. However, his value has risen after making 36 La Liga starts this season, despite Villarreal missing out on European football. Selling Jorgensen, a product of their academy, would significantly boost Villarreal’s financial position in UEFA’s eyes.
Which Clubs Need a New Goalkeeper?
Chelsea already have Petrovic and Sanchez, along with Gabriel Slonina, who may join the senior ranks in 2025. Newcastle, on the other hand, is looking for competition for Nick Pope and has shown interest in an English prospect as well.
Wolves have Jose Sa as their current number one, but he could attract interest from clubs in Europe and Saudi Arabia. While Wolves might want to upgrade their backup goalkeeper, Daniel Bentley, their financial constraints mean they are unlikely to invest heavily in another goalkeeper unless they sell Sa.
