Arsene Wenger reveals the player he regrets selling at Arsenal
Former Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has revealed the player he regretted selling while he was in charge at Emirate Stadium.
Wenger was in charge at Emirate stadium for 22 years, and during that period, he oversaw the signing of over 500 players.
Of all the players he ever sold while at Arsenal, Wenger revealed he regrets selling Nicolas Anelka.
Anelka moved to England as an unknown 17-year-old but would leave for Real Madrid as the most exciting young striker in European football.
Before Anelka left EPL, he led Arsenal’s attack during the second half of the 1997/1998 season in the absence of Ian Wright and won the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
When he was sold, Arsenal made a staggering £22.5 million profit on him as he had cost them £500,000 from French club Monaco.
Arsenal would use the proceeds from Anelka’s sales to sign France international Thierry Henry.
Amelia, however, failed to impress at Real Madrid and had to leave the club; he would go on to play for a total of 13 clubs, including five more in England alone.
Speaking at an event alongside his friend and former colleague David Dein, Wenger said: “Yes, we used the Arsene Wenger card, and players wanted to go to where they would win.
“My biggest regret and shame is that Anelka left. He could have been special, instead, he played for 13 clubs,” he said.
