Former Arsenal defender William Gallas has advised the club to withdraw from the race to sign Viktor Gyökeres and instead focus on securing a striker who he believes is a better long-term fit for Mikel Arteta’s system.

Arsenal are expected to make a major move for a top forward this summer, aiming to end their recent trophy drought and strengthen their title credentials. Kai Havertz has led the line for much of the past two seasons, but doubts remain about his effectiveness as a central striker in a team challenging for top honours.

Although the club opted against signing a striker in the January transfer window, they are actively pursuing several high-profile targets this summer, including Gyökeres, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško. Gyökeres, who has reportedly turned down a move to Manchester United in favour of Arsenal, remains in talks with the Gunners — but negotiations with both the player and Sporting Lisbon have proven difficult.

Osimhen has also been considered, but Gallas believes neither he nor Gyökeres is the right fit for Arsenal’s style. He suggests the club should instead “break the bank” for a forward he deems ideal for the squad, though he did not name a specific player.

Šeško is now viewed as the most realistic option, though his club’s valuation could pose a challenge as Arsenal seek to finalise their summer transfer plans.
