Arsenal Icon Praises Julian Alvarez Amid Transfer Speculations

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has previously praised Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, comparing him to Dennis Bergkamp.

As Arsenal searches for a new forward this summer, Alvarez has been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium.

Martin Keown’s High Praise for Alvarez

Keown likened Alvarez to the iconic Dennis Bergkamp, highlighting his movement and intelligence on the pitch. “He reminds me of Bergkamp because he starts as a striker and just wanders into that position and you’re wondering who will pick him up,” Keown said on Match of the Day. “They haven’t missed De Bruyne, which is a massive credit to him. His intelligence of movement where he wanders into that spot, always looking for space, always in the pocket and they always find him.”

Arsenal’s Search for a Forward

Arsenal’s pursuit of a new striker has intensified after RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko decided to sign a new contract, ending speculation about his potential move. Fabrizio Romano reported that Sesko’s decision has forced Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu to explore alternative options.

Interest in Julian Alvarez

Alvarez has reportedly attracted interest from several clubs, including Chelsea, following an impressive season with Manchester City.

Despite competing with Erling Haaland, Alvarez made 54 appearances last season, contributing to 32 goals. His standout performance included scoring a brace against Fluminense in the Club World Cup final.

Challenges in Signing Alvarez

While Keown’s praise could bolster Arsenal’s case if they pursue Alvarez, signing him might be challenging. Alvarez recently told ESPN, “These are things that are said, but I am calm; I am comfortable and happy at City; we will see what happens.” His contract with Manchester City runs until 2028, and the club has historically shown a willingness to sell top players to Premier League rivals.

Arsenal previously signed Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from City, while Chelsea acquired Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer.

A new striker could be the final piece Arsenal needs to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.

While acquiring Alvarez would require a significant fee, Keown’s high regard for the player could play a role in Arsenal’s transfer strategy.

Meanwhile, Chelsea is also in the market for a forward to compete with Nicolas Jackson, adding another layer of competition for Alvarez’s signature.
