Chelsea to cut players’ salaries after UCL elimination

A report via the Daily Mail has revealed Chelsea players’ failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League will see the club cut their wages.,

Recall that the Blues were kicked out from this season’s competition by Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Chelsea who are two-time UCL winners would not feature in Europe’s top elite club tournament for the 2023/2024 campaign.

They are also likely to miss out on other European tournaments as they currently sit outside the top six on the Premier League table.

Following their takeover last year, Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital implemented a bonus structure to player contracts linked to Champions League qualification.

The clauses would see their salaries fluctuate depending on whether they were playing in the competition.

It was a significant change from the ownership era of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who only rewarded players for winning trophies.
