Former Arsenal star Ian Wright has sent a message to the club’s board on the the need to back their manager Mikel Arteta this January transfer window.

Wright said this in a statement after the North London club were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

While Arteta’s side dominated the match, they lost big chances through Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz.

They also found it hard to break the the visitors down and often looked bereft of motivation in attack.

Before the defeat to the Magpies, Arsenal had also dropped points against Fulham, Everton and Brighton, falling behind in the Premier League title race.

According to Wright, the current Arsenal squad will continue to struggle except they bring in reinforcement.

Wright in statement via ITV stressed that Arteta needed help, including making some new additions this January window else it would be difficult to score if they continue with the current squad.

“We’re not scoring with the corners, we’re not scoring with the chances we’re making, something needs to change. Something needs to happen,” Wright said.
