Calafiori: Arteta queried for signing defender
Arsenal’s progress this season as the chances of them winning the EPL title become tougher has raised questions on why they didn’t sign an attacker in the last summer transfer window.
Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Petit in a recent statement questioned manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to splash £42 million on defender Riccardo Calafiori in the summer.
Petit stated that the Gunners instead of signing a new defender should have bolstered their attacking options by welcoming a striker.
Recall that Arsenal defeated Premier League rivals Chelsea in the race to sign the 22-year-old defender from Bologna.
The Italian spent just one season with Bologna to secure a move to Emirates Stadium.
However, Petit queried why Arteta decided to sign Calafiori rather than bolstering their attack.
When asked if the North London should sign a new striker this January transfer window, Petit told Casino Utan Spelpaus that they should have addressed that in the last transfer window.
He pointed out that the Gunners signed Calafiori when they already had two or three players that could play at left-back.
“I’m a big fan of Calafiori, but when you look at it, when you look at the young guy Lewis-Skelly, he’s doing so well, and Zinchenko is on the bench most of the time, so they had that part of the pitch covered,” Petit said.
