Arsenal returned to action in the Emirates Cup on Wednesday when they played against Spanish side Villarreal, which ended in a 3-2 defeat for the Gunners.

The game against Villarreal saw Arsenal new striker Viktor Gyokeres earn his first start with all eyes on him.

Arsenal fans were hoping to see action from the 27-year-old striker, that would give them assurance of lifting a trophy next season for the first time since 2020.

However, the cheers Gyokeres received before kick-off from Arsenal fans were drowned by the impressive performance of talented 15-year-old Max Dowman.

There was high expectation each time the ball went near Gyokeres and it looked as though Arsenal players were also working to ensure he score his debut goal.

However, this did not happen as Arsenal lost 3-2 to Villarreal, with Arsenal summer signing Christian Norgaard and captain Martin Odegaard scoring for the Gunners.

Despite his failure to score a goal, there were promising signs from Gyokeres before Arsenal start the new season with an opening match against Manchester United on Sunday, 17 August.
