Arsenal Secure First Summer Signing as Arteta Targets Midfield Reinforcements
Arsenal are set to finalise their first major signing of the summer with the arrival of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, while Mikel Arteta continues to work on securing further midfield additions, according to multiple reports.
Zubimendi’s long-anticipated transfer is now considered all but complete, with the 25-year-old midfielder reportedly in London to wrap up the final details. Despite speculation from the Spanish media linking him to Real Madrid, football journalist Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Madrid never submitted a formal offer. “Martin Zubimendi in London to complete his Arsenal move from Real Sociedad. Deal agreed in principle in May. Real Madrid never made a formal approach,” Jacobs posted on X.
The Spain international is expected to join for a fee of £55 million, bringing composure, tactical awareness, and depth to Arsenal’s midfield. His arrival follows the departure of Jorginho to Flamengo on a free transfer and anticipates the exit of Thomas Partey, whose contract has expired. Although Arteta has publicly praised Partey and hoped to retain him, the club appears prepared for his departure.
With Zubimendi set to become the first signing of the window, Arsenal are actively working behind the scenes to secure at least one more midfielder. The focus is on bolstering squad depth and maintaining the momentum built over the past two seasons, as the Gunners aim to challenge both domestically and in Europe in the upcoming campaign.
